Carol Sherlin Biography

Carol Sherlin: a life in four acts (and counting)

Act One

Carol's earliest memories are of her singing in Japanese, German, and English - as she traveled the world with her family in the military.
As a high school student in Miami Beach, she sang her way to become Miss Teenage Miami and Florida's Junior Miss. In both national competitions, with an aria from Die Fledermaus, she was voted the Top Teen Talent. She then won the Miss Florida contest and went on to capture the title of runner-up at the Miss America pageant where she sang the coloratura selection, Il Bacio by Luigi Arditi to a standing ovation.
With a rich and pure voice, her life-long career as a singer began. At the University of Miami, she majored in music education while continuing to sing professionally on television and on stage. After a year's stint as CBS television's "Weather Girl" in Miami, she moved to New York at 21 to study with the famed coloratura coach, Estelle Liebling.
On weekends, with the help of songwriter and musical director Bernie Wayne, Carol wowed the audiences in the Catskills, singing at the Concord, Grossinger's, and mid-town lounges. Called back to Miami Beach to be featured in performances at the Comedy Box and other major supper clubs, she also had a two-year run in the title role of Kiss Me Kate. Never neglecting her classical side, Carol was featured as a soloist with both the Miami Opera and the Miami Philharmonic.

Act Two

Fluency in Spanish was added to her linguistic abilities when she moved to Argentina. There, she became one of the best-known television and stage "names." She received rave reviews for her performances in a series of original one-woman musical shows that she co-wrote with musical director, Pepe Cibrián Campoy. She was the weekly guest star on the highly rated national television show, Mirtha Legrand, the Argentine legend frequently compared to Oprah Winfrey. In these weekly appearances, Carol starred in the Spanish version of such shows as My Fair Lady, Phantom of The Opera, Gypsy, and No No Nanette. Her series of cabaret shows were sell-outs.
Fifteen years later, when Carol moved back to Miami, she found a warm welcome. She headlined in shows such as Side By Side By Sondheim, joined the Screen Actors Guild, and appeared in everything from national television commercials to an Italian movie, Tanto e Quanto.

Act Three

A high school reunion changed Carol's life again when she met the love of her life and in 1993 moved to New York City to be with him. This began the scholarly phase of Carol's life. She began NYU's master's program in music therapy, then she switched to a five-year doctoral program in clinical psychology at LIU. After obtaining her doctoral degree, she then invested four more years in postdoctoral training, earning a certification in Psychoanalysis. In her Manhattan practice, Carol has often treated musicians and others in the performing arts.

Act Four

With deeper understanding and insight into the dynamics and feelings of interpersonal relationships, Carol recorded a CD produced by two brilliant and talented artists, Stevie Holland and Gary William Friedman. Entitled That Old Feeling, the CD showcases not only Carol's silvery voice but also a style of singing that is meaningful, emotional, and honest. In March 2007, again with the inspirational guidance of Stevie Holland and Gary William Friedman as artistic supervisors, Carol appeared in her first New York Cabaret, Serenading The Moon: Songs of Love and Lunacy. In the show, at Don't Tell Mama on March 5, 6, and 12, Carol looked beneath the surface of feeling "moonstruck" with songs about going "crazy in love." She was warmly received by her audience, and her last performance was "sold out."

By popular demand, Carol returns to Don't Tell Mama on April 30th with a new show entitled Shades of Attachment. Carol will then make her London cabaret debut on May 22nd at the Battersea Barge.
